How It All Began

It all started on a cool Friday morning when a little girl was born...

I’m just kidding. I’m not here to tell you my whole life story! You want to know when I first started learning new languages, right? Well here goes...

When I was a small child (sometime before becoming a small adult), I was SO interested in French. This may have stemmed from my grandparents coming from the French-speaking part of Canada. I wanted to learn so bad, but wasn’t able to learn from my grandmother as she passed away when I was young. All we pretty much learned as kids was “Fermez la bouche!” You can use Google Translate to figure out what that means...

So as I got older, I tried to find new ways of learning. At first, I got a French-English dictionary, but that didn’t get me far. Then I joined middle school French club, which was kind of cool, but also kind of awkward because most people in there didn’t want to admit they were staying after school to do more learning on purpose. Anyway, I’m not sure what happened with that club. They might have cancelled it or I might have quit.

So after that, I somehow got my hands on a Berlitz French CD-rom. (Thanks Mom?) This was great, but I did not have a microphone to connect to my computer, so I couldn’t pass the first level without passing a speaking test. *insert eye roll emoji here* How technology has changed!

Finally, I started French in high school with the same teacher that my mom had when she was a student, Mademoiselle, as she had us call her (even though she was a bit past the point of a young lady). I completed 4 years of French in high school, and loved to practice speaking and singing Celine Dion songs with a few of my classmates (you know who you are). Happened to do 4 more years in college as my double major. But the best part of this was being able to study abroad in Cannes, France. I can’t even describe that experience right now (but maybe I’ll try to at another time for all those considering it).

Next came Spanish!
